PrimeCare Medical, a North County prison health coordinator, recently settled 36 lawsuits due to prison conditions. Reports indicate that 36 inmates contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
MRSA is a bacteria infection that is most commonly caught during hospital stays. MRSA symptoms include chills, chest pain, cough, fatigue, fever, Muscle aches, rashes and shortness of breath. The lawsuit was more than three years old as they were filed in 2007. The suits were filed by a Philadelphia law firm out of Philadelphia.
The defense argued that there was no evidence to prove that the conditions within the prison caused the outbreak of MRSA. The plaintiffs argued that the conditions within the prison were unacceptable. The suit provided allegations that the conditions of the prison directly caused the outbreak. Among the allegations within the complaint included overcrowded conditions, leaking roofs, dirty drinking water, infestation of cochroaches, sewage backup and moldy bathrooms.
The terms of the settlement were not released.
